Biography...

Sathiyasangaree "Gary" Anandasangaree, born in Jaffna in 1973, is a Canadian politician and lawyer who has played a significant role in public service. He is the son of V. Anandasangaree, a well-known Sri Lankan Tamil politician.
Following his parents' separation in 1980, he and his mother moved to Ireland. Their plans to return to Sri Lanka in 1983 were disrupted by the Black July anti-Tamil riots, leading them to immigrate to Canada on August 31, 1983.

  • He worked in real estate before earning his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2005. He later established his own law firm specializing in business, real estate, and international human rights law.
  • He has been actively involved in several community organizations, including the Canadian Tamil Congress and the Canadian Tamils’ Chamber of Commerce. He has also served as a lecturer at Centennial College.
  • He has been a vocal critic of human rights abuses during the Sri Lankan Civil War and has participated in United Nations Human Rights Council sessions.
  • He joined the Liberal Party and won the 2015 federal election for Scarborough—Rouge Park. Since then, he has held several parliamentary roles, including Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

In 2013, He was appointed as Canada’s Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, playing a key role in Indigenous affairs and reconciliation efforts.
