NRI Jinson Charls, born in kerela, is set to assume the role of minister for disability, arts, veterans, and multicultural affairs. He ousted a Labour minister in the recent Northern Territory (NT) elections in Australia.
In addition, he will oversee the portfolios related to youth, seniors, and equality, as well as people, sport, and culture.
Originally from Kerala, India, Mr. Charls relocated to the Northern Territory in 2015, where he has since served as a registered nurse and held various leadership positions in the health sector.
Jinson Charls is one of two NRI candidates elected to the regional assembly last month. Another, Khoda Patel from Gujarat, also claimed a seat.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation:
Leveraging his background as a registered nurse and his leadership roles in the health sector, Charls will also handle the portfolios for youth, seniors, and equality, as well as people, sport, and culture.
The report underscored that this appointment marks a historic moment for the NT parliament, with the new government now having the most substantial representation of politicians from South Asian and South-East Asian backgrounds in its history.
