Dr. Rabbi Alam, Vice President of the US Awami League, has voiced strong confidence that Sheikh Hasina will reclaim her position as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He also expressed gratitude to India for providing her refuge after she left the country on August 5, 2024, following massive protests against her administration over a job quota issue.

Speaking to Indian news agency ANI, Dr. Alam called for the resignation of interim government leader Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel laureate who took over after Hasina’s removal. “We urge the Bangladesh Advisor to step down and return to where he came from,” he stated. “Sheikh Hasina will return as Prime Minister. The younger generation was misled, but they are not to blame.”

Court Seizes Hasina’s Properties and Freezes Bank Accounts

In a further blow to Hasina and her family, a Dhaka court has ordered the confiscation of multiple properties and the freezing of 124 bank accounts linked to them. Among the seized assets is Hasina’s Dhanmondi residence, ‘Sudasadan,’ which is registered under the names of her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and daughter, Saima Wazed Putul.

The court order, issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain following a request from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), also includes properties in Gulshan, Dhanmondi, and Gazipur, as well as multiple flats in the capital city.

Additionally, the court has banned Hasina, Joy, Putul, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and other family members from leaving the country. However, all of them had already left Bangladesh before the order was issued.
                Hasina’s Removal and Political Unrest
Bangladesh witnessed intense protests in 2024, particularly led by students opposing Hasina’s job quota policies. The unrest turned violent, resulting in over 600 deaths and worsening political instability.
Hasina, Bangladesh’s longest-serving Prime Minister, fled to India on August 5, 2024, after weeks of demonstrations forced her out of power. Her departure came only months after she secured victory in the general elections and formed a government. Since then, Muhammad Yunus has been leading an interim administration, but opposition to his leadership continues to grow.
