Bangladesh's Dhaka Metropolitan Court has ordered an investigation into former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in connection with her alleged involvement in the killing of a man by police during recent protests. The incident, which occurred on July 19, is part of a broader probe into the violent suppression of demonstrations that eventually led to Hasina's ouster.

Hasina, who fled the country earlier this month amidst widespread unrest, is accused along with several high-ranking officials. The murder complaint is the first legal action against her related to the government's violent crackdown on protests against employment quotas. Reports indicate that clashes between students, government supporters, and armed police resulted in approximately 300 deaths, including at least 32 children, as reported by the United Nations.

The court's complaint also names Hasina’s former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, her party's general secretary, and four former senior police officers.

In her first public statement since fleeing Bangladesh, Hasina has called for an investigation into the violence and destruction that occurred during the protests. Her remarks, made through a social media post via her son, condemned the “sabotage, arson, and violence” but did not address the murder allegations against her. She emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable.

The protests initially started over the government’s quota system for civil service positions but evolved into a broader movement demanding Hasina’s resignation. The government's heavy-handed response, including internet blackouts and curfews, intensified the unrest. After Hasina fled to India, Bangladesh dissolved its parliament. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has since taken charge of a caretaker government, with elections slated to occur within the next three months.
