Kulwinder Sanghera,

NRI, Kulwinder Sanghera graduated from Queen Elizabeth
Secondary School, Surreyi in 1984 and pursued a career
in electrical engineering at the Vancouver Vocational
Institute. In 1986 he joined BCIT to further his interest
in Electronics, graduating in 1989. Since arriving
in Canada with his family in 1979, he has risen from
humble beginnings in Jalandhar, India, to become a
mentor to the Canadian South Asian community and a
respected business leader and community supporter.
Kulwinder Sanghera is the president of Music Waves,
a production company that specializes in production
as well as distribution of South Asian contemporary
music. In 1982 he joined Surrey arts India club, performing
in many events including Canada day celebrations,
Expo '86, the annual PNE parade and opening ceremonies
at BC place stadium.Today, he helps organizing cultural
events, teaching Indian bhangra and mentoring local
musicians and performers in the South Asian music
community.
Kulwinder recognized the need and potential of an
Indo-Canadian video rental & sales store. He organized
his family to open Ravi Video, today a household name
in the South Asian community. Kulwinder's interest
in music and culture, and his enterpreneurial flair,
led him to form Music Waves Productions Ltd.
Kulwinder spent two years lobbying a local multicultural
(cable) TV station on the importance of providing
multicultural programming to local Punjabi community.
He was successfull in convincing the local station
management to telecast ethnic programming to serve
the South Aisan communities. Due to his visionary
leadership, today there are more than eight Punjabi
and South Asian language television shows on air in
Greater Vancouver.
Kulwinder Sanghera's vision and goal is not only
to provide multicultural programming that suits the
2nd and 3rd generation ethnic groups, but also to
educate them about their roots, reduce the generation
gap and promote the Canadian way of life (multiculturism).
His brother Surinder supportedhim in forming Ravi
Video. He has been instrumental in the success of
Ravi Video. Surinder Sanghera is known as people person.
His success is largely due to his natural ability
to deal with people. Presently he also handles public
affairs and heads the distribution department of Music
Waves. He will play an important role in the success
of the proposed radio service to be operated by The
South Asian Broadcasting Corporation Inc.
