Starting April 2, 2025, European visitors must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before traveling to the UK. This digital approval will be mandatory for visitors who currently do not need a visa or have UK immigration status.
While travelers from the US without a UK visa are already required to apply for an ETA, Indian citizens remain unaffected as they must obtain a visa regardless. The application process will be conducted online or via an app, raising concerns about accessibility for less tech-savvy individuals.
Initially priced at £10 ($12.75/€12), the cost of the ETA is set to rise to £16 ($20.70). The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has criticized the decision, arguing that increased travel fees may deter visitors.
Meanwhile, UK citizens will also face new entry requirements when traveling to the EU. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), set to launch in 2026, will require visa-exempt travelers to obtain digital approval at a cost of €7 ($7.60), with some exemptions. Additionally, an Entry/Exit System (EES) for registering travelers is expected to be implemented by October 2025.
Since Brexit, travel between the UK and EU has become increasingly complex, leading some travelers, like John Francis, to seek dual nationality for smoother border crossings.
