- Iran has suspended visa-free entry for ordinary Indian passport holders beginning November 22, 2025.
- The decision follows reports of Indians being lured with fake job offers and subsequently kidnapped for ransom in Iran.
- Many Indian travelers were misled by agents promising easy job placements or onward travel routes.
- Criminal groups reportedly posed as recruitment or travel agents to exploit the visa-waiver facility.
- These groups tricked Indians into flying to Iran, where they were abducted upon arrival.
- Iran halted the visa-waiver scheme to prevent further misuse by criminal networks.
- The Indian Embassy announced that Indians now require a visa to enter or transit through Iran.
- Travelers have been advised to remain extremely vigilant when planning trips to Iran.
- The embassy specifically warned against agents offering visa-free travel or onward passage to third countries via Iran.
- In May, the Indian Embassy in Tehran reported that three Indian nationals had gone missing in Iran.
- The missing men — Hushanpreet Singh, Jaspal Singh, and Amritpal Singh — are all from Punjab.
- They reportedly lost contact with their families shortly after landing in Tehran on May 1.
- The men intended to travel to Australia via Dubai and Iran using an agent from Hoshiarpur, who also went missing.
- The families claimed the men were kidnapped, and a ransom demand was made.
- In early June, Iranian police conducted a rescue operation in Varamin, safely recovering all three men, who are now under the Indian Embassy’s care awaiting repatriation.
