NRI entrepreneur & philanthropist Gururaj Deshpande ("Desh"), who was born in Karnataka, son of a labor commissioner with the Indian government landed in Cnada in 1980.

Now Gururaj Deshpande is the Chairman of A123Systems, Sycamore Networks, Tejas Networks, HiveFire, Sandstone Capital, Sparta Group and sits on the Board of Airvana.

  • In 1998, he started Sycamore Networks,went public in October 1999, and raised a market cap of $18 billion. He owned 21% shares and become one of the wealthiest self-made businessmen in the world. His net worth to a peak of $13 billion, making him the wealthiest Indian on earth. Sycamore’s share price has since plummeted from a high of about $200 to less than $5. .In May 2001, Sycamore's stock had fallen more than 90% from its peak. telecom network operators shifted to different technologies.
