Free medical camp was organised by the Walnut
Gurdwara, Walnut, California on Dec. 17, 2006 by association of
NRI Dr. Rajivinder S. Brar, D.O.,Ph.D. along with 14 of his NRI
students from Western University of Health.
This Clinic got very good response
and about 40 patients from sangat visited for medical check ups
and to get advise from the doctors. Many NRIs were screened for
diabetes, blood pressure, heart diseases, geriatric ailments, etc.
Most of the Doctors at the Clinic where
fluent in Punjabi and Hindi languages. They brought all the medical
intruments and set up the Medical Clinic at the premises Gurmat
School of Gurudwara Walnut. Gurudwara Walnut will be having this
clinic for sangat once every month.
As health care costs increase and a growing number
of NRIs are without insurance, the one health service that every
family needs deserves further attention. In California, most of
the NRIs are working in farming, gas station, grocery stores and
in tranporting businesses. Those NRIs who are unemployed, the self-employed,
and employees of small businesses get no insurance. NRIs will be
needing medical treatment for such illnesses as heart disease, diabetes,
hypertension and stroke.
The number of Americans without health insurance went
up 1.3 million from 45.3 million in 2004 to 46.6 million in 2005
- an increase from 15.6% to 15.9% of the country's population, says
a new US Census Bureau report.
The Collector appealed to the NRIs
to use the occasion and undergo screening as a preventive step.
