BRISBANE, Australia, April 20, 2009

US NRI doctor Dr. Jayant Patel,
who was extradited from the United States in July 2008, to face
14 charges including manslaughter, grievous bodily harm and fraud,
has been committed to stand trial:
- On 13 charges, including manslaughter of three patients -
James Phillips, Mervyn Morris and Gerardus Kemps
- The grievous bodily harm of two more - Darcy Blight and Ian
Vowles.
He also faces eight fraud charges for allegedly
dishonestly gaining employment, medical registration and a salary
in Queensland.
Magistrate Brian Hine did not change bail conditions
of Patel such as to report to police three times a week even Dr
Patel's lawyers requested repeatdly.
NRI Surinder Pal Singh told NRIpress reporter:
- It is shame for Australia media that as they are using his
name as "Dr Death", Jayant Patel when he is not guilty
by the court.
- In this case, some time they used as --- doctor educated from
India ... Indian doctor....
Surinder further said we must have strong human
rights laws and systems in place to address. We also have a legacy
of racism- particularly towards Aboriginal persons, but to other
groups as well including African, Chinese, Japanese, South Asian,
Jewish and Muslim – a legacy that profoundly permeates our
systems and structures to this day, affecting the lives of not
only racialized persons, but also all people in the world.
Racism is a broader experience and practice than
racial discrimination. It is an ideology that either directly
or indirectly asserts that one group is inherently superior to
others.
