Keep the Flu away this Fall!
By – Harpal Jande, M.D.

There is no mistaking the flu! You know it when you get it: aches, high fever, headache, extreme fatigue, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, and cough. Be sure to take care of yourself even if you are a healthy adult: the flu is a disease of the lungs and can lead to pneumonia.

The best way to prevent this illness is by getting a fly vaccination each fall. Children age 6 to 23 months, older adults and those with chronic diseases like asthma should definitely get a shot every year. October or November is the best time to get vaccinated, but getting vaccinated in December or even later can still be beneficial.

Older adults (age 65+) are at a potentially high risk for complications from both the flu and pneumonia. Ask your doctor if you should get a pneumonia shot. It can be given at the same time as your flu shot. Usually one shot protects for a lifetime.

You can also defend yourself by taking these precautions:

• Exercise regularly, eat nutritious foods and get plenty of rest.
• Wash your hands often. You can pick up a virus from even a handshake.
• Avoid touching the moist areas of your eyes, nose and mouth.
• Avoid sharing cups, glasses or utensils among family members or friends.

As always, consult your own physician regarding any medical advice.
