The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee condemns the steep hike in power tariff by the SAD-BJP Govt. Domestic Consumers are the most affected with an increase of 10.2 percent hike followed by industrial as well as agriculturist in Punjab on an average increase of 7.5 percent increase.
The people of Punjab would have to bear an additional burden of Rs. 950 crores with this anti people step of the Govt. Only recently the Sukhbir Kalia Committee set up for resource mobilization had put an extra burden of Rs. 4000 crores on the people of Punjab by raising various taxes, levies and other charges.
The SAD-BJP have gone back on their slogan of “Raj Nahin Sewa” with a new meaning of ‘Sewa’ for self and taxes for the people. The govt. is passing the buck of poor fiscal management and their utter failure to control finances on to the people of Punjab.
As we are aware Punjab is under a huge debt of Rs. 65000 crores with all financial parameters in disarray. Wrong policies and financial misadventurism have added an additional debt burden of Rs. 35000 crores on account of loss making corporations and boards.
Instead of putting its house in order by restructuring or doing away with loss making PSU’s the Govt. is hell bent on burdening the people of Punjab with fresh taxes when the people are facing the heat of recession due to economy slow down. Therefore the congress party urges the Govt. to withdraw hike in power sector and advises the govt. to cut down on wasteful expenditures such as these loss making PSU’s, expensive air travel of CM and Dy. CM, waste of public exchequer on full pages advertisements and also the govt. must undertake austerity measures.
