NRI Ashleen Khela, an 12-year-old girl from Kenthurst, a suburb in northwest Sydney, Australia, has made history as the youngest Australian female author to publish a fiction book at such a young age. A student of Year 6 at Kenthurst Public School, Ashleen is deeply passionate about writing, and her love for storytelling is evident in her work. In addition to writing, she enjoys dancing, singing, acting, drawing, and helping others.
NRI Ashleen’s Inspiring Journey to Publishing Her First Book
Her debut book, ‘17 Stories’, is a collection of fictional narratives she wrote in 2022 and 2023. Despite having the financial support of her parents, Ashleen made a remarkable decision—to fund the publication of her book entirely on her own.
For over two years, she actively collected plastic and glass bottles, along with soft drink cans, and took them to NSW recycling stations to raise money. She also planted and sold fruit trees, including mango, guava, yucca, and jacaranda, by selling them online from her own backyard. In addition, she broke open her long-standing piggy bank, using her savings in gold and silver coins to cover postage expenses for shipping her books from the publisher overseas to Australia.
A Young Author with a Heart for Charity
Ashleen is not just an author but also a philanthropist at heart. She has pledged to donate all profits from the sales of ‘17 Stories’ to charitable organizations, including the Cancer Council of Australia, Starlight Children’s Foundation, and underprivileged children in developing countries.
Looking ahead, Ashleen dreams of establishing her own charity in the future to support disadvantaged children worldwide. She is determined to continue writing and has set an ambitious goal—to publish one book every year to raise funds for charitable causes. Alongside her writing journey, she aspires to become a doctor and actively volunteer for social justice organizations, focusing on raising awareness about human rights, child abuse, and environmental issues.
Ashleen’s Message of Gratitude
A hardworking and determined young girl, Ashleen acknowledges the invaluable support of her family, teachers, and school. She expresses heartfelt appreciation, saying:
"I want to sincerely thank my family, teachers, and school for always encouraging and supporting me in my writing. A special thanks to my parents, who have always told me that nothing is impossible. Without their love and support, I might have struggled to complete my first book, so I am forever grateful to them!"
She also extends her gratitude to everyone who has purchased or is planning to buy her book, stating:
"Words cannot express how thankful I am for your support. Your contribution means the world to me. Without you sponsoring or purchasing my book, I wouldn’t be able to pursue my dream of giving back to society through charity. I hope you and your loved ones enjoy reading my stories, and I sincerely ask for your continued support in my mission to make a difference."
With her determination, talent, and generosity, Ashleen Khela is not only making waves in the literary world but also inspiring young minds to believe that age is no barrier to achieving dreams and helping others.
