NRI Raghuram Rajan, Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, has been appointed to a key U.S. Federal Reserve task force, reinforcing his standing as one of the world's most respected economists.

The task force will provide expert guidance on critical issues affecting the U.S. financial system, monetary policy, and long-term economic stability. Rajan's appointment reflects his extensive experience in global finance and central banking.

Biography Raghuram Rajan: Economist and Former RBI Governor

Raghuram Govind Rajan is one of India's most distinguished economists and a globally recognized expert in banking and financial policy. Born on February 3, 1963, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, he is currently the Katherine Dusak Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Rajan earned a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi, an MBA (PGDM) from IIM Ahmedabad, where he received a gold medal, and a Ph.D. in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

He served as Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 2003 to 2006, becoming the first person from an emerging economy to hold the position. In 2005, he gained global recognition for warning about vulnerabilities in the financial system years before the 2008 global financial crisis, a prediction later widely acknowledged as remarkably accurate.

Rajan served as the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 2013 to 2016, where he was credited with strengthening India's financial system, reducing inflation, improving banking reforms, and enhancing financial stability. During his tenure, he also became Vice-Chairman of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).

An acclaimed author, Rajan wrote the award-winning book Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy, which received the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award in 2010. In 2016, he was named among Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People.
