Shri Dinesh K. Patnaik, a senior diplomat, has been appointed as India's next High Commissioner to Canada by the Government of India. A seasoned officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Patnaik brings with him decades of diplomatic experience in several countries and international organizations.CC

Patnaik has previously served in various key positions, including as India's Ambassador to Spain and Andorra, as well as Ambassador to Cambodia. He has also held important responsibilities at India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva and in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, where he has worked extensively on political, economic and cultural diplomacy.

Known for his expertise in global affairs and strategic relations, Patnaik is expected to play a key role in strengthening India-Canada ties, at a time when both countries are seeking to increase cooperation in trade, education, technology and diaspora engagement.

Shri Dinesh K. Patnaik, Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Batch of 1990. He is a distinguished Indian diplomat with over three decades of experience in the Indian Foreign Service. Throughout his career, he has held a variety of important assignments in India’s missions abroad and at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

  • Served as Ambassador of India to Spain and Andorra, where he strengthened bilateral relations in trade, culture, and innovation.
  • Served as Ambassador of India to Cambodia, playing a key role in deepening India’s engagement with Southeast Asia under the Act East Policy.
  • Held senior positions at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, engaging on issues of human rights, trade, and multilateral diplomacy.
  • Worked extensively in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi, on political, economic, and cultural diplomacy.
  • Served as Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), promoting India’s soft power through cultural diplomacy and educational exchanges.
  • Graduate in Economics, with an advanced degree in Business Administration (MBA).
  • Trained in international relations, diplomacy, and global economic policy.
