Dr. Manmohan Singh sworn in as PM

Dr. Manmohan Singh was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India's 13th Prime Ministeat 5.30 pm on Saturday. The oath was administered by President A P J Abdul Kalam in the Ashoka Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan. Singh, 71 year old in white kurta pyjama and blue turban, took the oath of office. A total of 67 ministers were sworn in along with Manmohan Singh. Eighteen regional, parties have pledged their support to a Congress-led coalition.

Vajpayee joins the club of former premiers who attended the function - IK Gujral, PV Narasimha Rao, VP Singh, Chandra Shekhar and HD Deve. Gowda Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who renounced the post of prime minister amid a shrill campaign against her foreign origin, also looked on, attired in a formal white sari with a black border. Sonia's children Rahul and Priyanka and her husband Robert Vadra also attended the ceremony.

  • Senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee and Arjun Singh were sworn in as Cabinet Ministers.
  • NCP leader Sharad Pawar was also sworn in as Cabinet minister.
  • RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav and Raghuvansa Prasad Singh took oath as Cabinet Ministers. Lok Janshakti Party leader Ram Vilas Paswan was also sworn in as a cabinet minister.
