Tahawur Hussain Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, is accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, in which more than 160 people were killed. The United States Supreme Court has dismissed a petition to stay the extradition of Rana to India.
Rana had filed an emergency application to stay the pending trial of a petition for a writ of habeas corpus, which was referred to the full court and later rejected.
The decision comes after US courts had earlier rejected Rana’s petitions against extradition. The US government had previously approved his extradition, with President Donald Trump announcing the decision during a press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Rana is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles. He is expected to be handed over to Indian authorities on a date agreed upon by both countries.
Indian authorities are seeking Rana's extradition for his alleged role in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which targeted multiple locations and resulted in significant casualties.
