Five NRIs Jailed, Caned for Fatal Singapore Hotel Brawl

Five NRIs involved in a fatal brawl near Concorde Hotel in August 2023 were sentenced to jail and caning on February 25. The group had assaulted former bouncer Mohammad Isrrat Mohd Ismail, 29, who was later allegedly stabbed to death by another member of their group.
The convicted men—Sridharan Elangovan, 30, Manojkumar Velayanatham, 32, Sashikumar Pakirsamy, 34, Raja Rishi, 28, and Puthenvilla Keith Peter, 26—pleaded guilty to rioting. They received jail terms ranging from two to three years and between two and six strokes of the cane.
Court proceedings revealed that the attack stemmed from a dispute between two secret society groups. The fight escalated outside Club Rumours at Concorde Hotel, where Isrrat and his companion, Muhammad Shahrulnizam Osman, had armed themselves with knives. Following a violent chase, Isrrat was repeatedly attacked and later fatally stabbed.
The alleged killer, Asvain Pachan Pillai Sukumaran, 30, faces a pending murder charge.
