NRI Del Manak, one of Canada’s most respected law enforcement leaders, has officially retired after serving 35 years in policing, including seven years as Chief Constable of the Victoria Police Department.

Manak, who grew up in Victoria as the son of Indian immigrants, made history as one of the first Sikh-Canadian police chiefs in the country. He joined the Victoria Police Department in 1990, steadily rising through the ranks before being appointed Chief Constable in 2017.

During his tenure, Manak was credited with modernizing the force, strengthening ties with diverse communities, and addressing complex challenges including organized crime, the opioid crisis, and public safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also championed equity, diversity, and inclusion within the department, mentoring officers from underrepresented backgrounds.

Reflecting on his retirement, Manak said he was proud of the department’s progress and grateful for the support of his colleagues and the public. Community leaders praised his leadership, describing him as a “bridge-builder” who combined professionalism with compassion.

The Victoria Police Board will soon begin the process of appointing a new chief to succeed him. Meanwhile, tributes have poured in from across Canada, recognizing Manak’s trailblazing role and his legacy of service.
