NRI Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University’s Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, was reportedly arrested outside his Virginia home on Monday night by masked agents.
Suri, scholar studying on a student visa, is being held at the Alexandria Staging Facility in Louisiana, awaiting an immigration hearing. His lawyer, Hassan Ahmad, confirmed the detention, calling it part of a broader crackdown by the Trump administration on student activists critical of US foreign policy.
The arrest follows similar actions, including the attempted deportation of Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil, who protested Israel’s role in the Gaza conflict. Critics argue the administration is using immigration law to suppress dissent.
Ahmad condemned Suri’s detention, stating, “If an accomplished scholar focusing on conflict resolution is deemed a foreign policy threat, the issue lies with the government, not the scholar.”
