The University of Oxford has revealed the 38 finalists competing for the prestigious role of Chancellor, with several Indian-origin candidates making the cut, while former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been excluded. The finalists include Ankur Shiv Bhandari, the first Indian-origin Mayor of Bracknell Forest; Nirpal Singh Paul Bhangal, a Professor of International Entrepreneurship; and Pratik Tarvadi, a medical professional. They are set to face off against prominent politicians, philanthropists, and academics.

Among the notable candidates are former Conservative Party leader Lord William Hague and former Labour politician Lord Peter Mandelson. However, Khan, an Oxford alumnus, did not make it past the selection process, with experts speculating his disqualification might be linked to his legal troubles in Pakistan. The university did not specify the reasons for his exclusion, stating that candidates were judged solely on four exclusion criteria.

Candidates vying for the role of Chancellor were assessed based on their outstanding achievements, respect across multiple fields, and deep appreciation for the university’s research and academic mission. The unremunerated role requires candidates to enhance Oxford’s global reputation and contribute to its ambitions to remain a world-class institution.

Voting by the university’s Convocation, which consists of staff and alumni, will take place online. The first round of voting begins in late October, with the top five finalists advancing to the second round in November. The new Chancellor, who will serve a maximum term of 10 years, will be announced in late November.

The Chancellor’s role, largely ceremonial, includes presiding over key university events and chairing the Committee to Elect the Vice-Chancellor. The position has been held by notable figures in the past, including former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and Lord Patten, the outgoing Chancellor.
