NRI Shazeb Khalid, 25, of Engineers Court, has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for the murder of Vignesh Raman, a 36-year-old restaurant manager, in a tragic incident that occurred on Valentine’s Day. Khalid was found guilty of using a stolen Range Rover to run over and kill Mr. Raman, who managed the Vel Indian restaurant in Whitley Street, Reading.

The motive for the attack was linked to Khalid's desire to prevent Mr. Raman from reporting alleged immigration violations at the restaurant, which had already been fined £30,000 for employing illegal immigrants. Khalid claimed during his trial that he only intended to scare Mr. Raman, not to kill him.

Judge Amjad Nawaz, presiding over the case at Reading Crown Court, sentenced Khalid to 20 years and 135 days in prison.

Another man, 27-year-old Soiheem Hussain, from Shinfield, was accused of plotting the murder alongside Khalid. However, Hussain was acquitted of the murder charge and was instead found guilty of assisting an offender. He received a four-year prison sentence.

The court also heard an emotional impact statement from Mr. Raman’s widow, Ramya, who described the devastating effect her husband’s death had on her life. She recounted how her dreams were shattered and how she struggled with panic attacks and grief after losing her partner.

Ramya revealed that her husband had turned down a job offer in the United States, believing that the UK would be a safer place for them to live. Just hours before his death, Mr. Raman had been celebrating a new job opportunity in London, one that he had considered his dream job.

Following her husband’s death, Ramya lost her spousal visa and her right to work in the UK, forcing her to return to India to care for her ill mother. In her statement, she spoke of the uncertainty surrounding her future and the profound sadness she feels at the loss of her husband.

Mr. Raman’s tragic death has left a lasting impact on his family, friends, and community, with many mourning the loss of a beloved and kind-hearted individual.
