NRI Dr. Jaskiran Kaur Bhogal has been announced by Wolfson College, University of Oxford, to the newly established Guru Nanak Stipendiary Research Fellowship, effective from February 2025. The prestigious position was made possible by a successful fundraising initiative, which was supported primarily by the Punjabi Sikh community in Britain.

NRI Dr. Bhogal holds a BSc in Economics and an MSc and PhD in Anthropology from the London School of Economics (LSE). Her academic work delves into how British Sikhs navigate the interplay between spirituality and daily life. She has focused on the role of key sites such as homes, schools, youth organizations, and community groups in shaping Sikh religiosity. Her research provides a unique lens into the teachings of Guru Nanak and the cultural legacy of Punjab within the British Sikh diaspora.

As the Guru Nanak Fellow, Dr. Bhogal will study the preservation of intangible heritage rooted in Punjab’s spiritual and historical traditions. Her research will specifically examine childbirth, child-rearing, and homemaking practices among Sikhs in Britain. Drawing on the teachings of Guru Nanak, the project will explore how Sikh families create spiritual and cultural spaces in their homes, ensuring the transmission of Punjab’s rich heritage across generations.

This fellowship underscores the importance of preserving Sikh traditions and Guru Nanak’s teachings while fostering academic exploration of the Sikh diaspora’s cultural identity in contemporary Britain
