Nitheesha Kandula, a 23-year-old Indian student, was last seen in Los Angeles on Tuesday and reported missing on Thursday. The Los Angeles Police Department issued a missing persons notice following her disappearance.
Kandula is a student at California State University, San Bernardino. Authorities from the university and the LAPD have urged anyone with information to contact them. The university's police department shared the notice on social media, requesting assistance in locating Kandula.
According to John Guttierez, the Chief of Police at CSUSB, Kandula's last known vehicle is a 2021 Toyota Corolla with the California license plate #9KXU509, although the vehicle's color is unknown. Kandula is described as being 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing around 160 pounds (72.5 kg), with black hair and black eyes. She is originally from Hyderabad in southern India.
The police have provided contact numbers for anyone with information: CSUSB Police Department at (909) 538-7777 and LAPD’s Southwest Division at (213) 485-2582.
Kandula's disappearance is the latest in a series of incidents involving Indian students in the US. In April, there were reports of six to ten suspicious fatalities among the Indian community this year. Last month, 26-year-old Indian student Rupesh Chandra Chintakind went missing in Chicago. In April, an Indian student died in Cleveland, Ohio, with the Indian Consulate in New York reporting the death.
Some Indian students attribute these incidents to increased threats and discrimination. In response, the Indian Embassy held virtual sessions in February focusing on student wellbeing and maintaining connections with the diaspora. These sessions, led by Ambassador Sripriya Ranganathan and attended by consul generals from several US cities, saw participation from students of 90 universities.
There are approximately 4.4 million Indian-Americans, with 268,923 Indian students attending US institutions in the 2022-2023 academic year. Additionally, thousands of individuals from India come to the US on work visas each year.
