A British man embarked on an incredible 59-day drive through 16 countries to visit his mother in Maharashtra, India. The journey, detailed by the Times of India, spanned from April 20 to June 17, 2024.
Virajit Mungale, an IT professional, traveled 18,300 kilometers from London to Thane, where his mother lives in Raunak Park.
While Mungale regularly visits his mother, this trip was unique, traversing the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tibet, and Nepal.
Mungale was accompanied by Nepalese citizen Roshan Shresta until Kathmandu. His wife and a relative joined him from there for the rest of the journey.
Inspired by the Silk Route and a similar trip undertaken by a couple, Mungale planned his journey after receiving no response to his queries for advice.
Expressing gratitude to his wife, he said, “When I told my wife about the plan, she thought I was joking, but later she supported it, and that’s how I planned the entire trip,” as reported by TOI.
The trip, initially planned before the pandemic, finally took place this year.
According to TOI, Mungale averaged 400-600 kilometers per day, sometimes reaching up to 1,000 kilometers, depending on road conditions.
Mungale said:
To ensure safety, he avoided night driving. “We did pre-maintenance on the SUV but faced a minor issue in Poland, which we resolved, and the rest of the drive was smooth,” The journey required Mungale to take a two-month unpaid leave from work and obtain all necessary permissions for the various countries.
“Being a British national, I had no issues entering European or other countries. All my documents were ready, and the legal processes were taken care of.”“We didn’t face extreme weather, though it was summer in most places. We reached altitudes of 5,200 meters, experiencing minor altitude sickness, snow, and extreme cold. It was an amazing experience, but we were well-prepared.”
“Food wasn’t a problem; I eat almost everything except beef and insects. We would take a break after 3-4 pm to find a place to stay for the night.”
