The parents of Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student who went missing in Punta Cana nearly two weeks ago, have asked the authorities to declare her legally dead. In a letter to Dominican police, Subarayudu and Sridevi Konanki said authorities believe their daughter drowned after an extensive search turned up nothing.
“This step will bring some closure and allow us to honor her memory,” they wrote, emphasizing the need to begin the grieving process.
Konanki disappeared from a beach near her hotel before dawn on March 6 while she was on a spring break trip with five friends. Dominican authorities have questioned several people, including Joshua Rebe, a senior at St. Cloud University in Minnesota, who is believed to be the last person to see her.
Rebe has not been named as a suspect but is under investigation. He appeared in court on Tuesday, where lawyers confirmed that he is not under arrest but is unable to leave the country. His passport and phone number are in official custody.
US officials have pledged full support to the Konanki family as Dominican authorities continue their investigation.
