Call centre helped nail Hannah Foster rapist

New Delhi, July 22, 2004

Perhaps, now, BPO-baiters in Britain will have kind words to say about Indian call centres. For it was a Gurgaon-based call centre which helped police in faraway Darjeeling hills nail Hannah Forster’s rapist-killer and UK’s most wanted criminal, Maninder Pal Singh Kohli.

Today, an afternoon daily, reported on Thursday how a Gurgaon-based call centre was responsible for managing a toll-free number that Hannah’s parents had announced along with a reward of Rs 50 lakh to trace their daughter’s rapist and killer.

The Fosters had traveled to India and announced the reward and three hotline number on July 13. The call centre, which Today says didn’t want to be named, received over 100 calls on the first day itself.

The call centre received a total of some 2,000 calls. Among these were 10 calls from Kalimpong, from where Maninder was eventually arrested.

The daily says, some of the callers from Kalimpong gave precise details of Maninder, including his "activities, his place of residence and other backgrounds".

The hotline was set up by British Gas, where Hannah’s father is employed.

The call centre has now shortlisted the 10 calls from Kalimpong, received on July 14, for the Rs 50-lakh reward

A committee of four people - the Forsters, a family sympathiser and detective Allen Betts, who had traveled with Hannah’s parents to India – will decide who is to get the reward, Today, reports.

The call centre, which had passed on the lead to Detective Betts who in turn reported to the police, reportedly has precise details about the callers.

Among the calls from Kalimpong, termed ‘important’, was one that said Maninder had been seen around the area ‘giving injections’, while another caller claimed he had married his friend.

Soon after the arrest, all 10 callers called the call centre saying they reported Maninder first, an employee said.

Whoever gets to claim the Rs 50-lakh bounty eventually, it is certainly the Gurgaon-call centre that gets the kudos.
