couple, Paramjit Walia and his wife Kalpana Walia from Toronto,
went to India to celebrate their silver 25th wedding anniversary.
The couple was visiting Sikh holy city Amritsar,
when they were returning to their hotel near the Golden Temple
after having dinner at a restaurant on Cooper Road on Sunday night,
intercepted by snatchers near Lawrence Road. During a scuffle
and stiff resistance, Kalpana Walia fell from a rickshaw near
Crystal Chowk and her head hit the road. After a long wait, with
the help of a few people, Paramjit took his wife to hospital where
she was declared dead.
According to local media:
- The snatchers, two motorcycle-borne youths fled away without
the bag. Paramjit said he cried out for help, but no police
personnel gave him an ear and he stood there helplessly.
- Paramjit was reportedly sent from one police station to the
other on the pretext of jurisdiction problem. He then called
his relatives from Jalandhar who pressurized the cops and finally
a case was registered under Section 304 of the IPC at Civil
Lines Police Station.
- Paramjit said, “There is absolutely nothing in the name
of security for NRIs here in the city.”
- He has decided to report to the Canadian Embassy
Police consider mysterious death, Husband being probed:
- SHO Vijay Kumar said it had become a little complicated as
there were no eyewitnesses. We are probing the matter and will
arrest the accused soon
- SSP, Amritsar, Kuvar Vijay Partap Singh said:
- This is a doubtful case and it would be difficult to say
that some looters have attacked on Kalpana in a bid to snatch
her purse.
- Paramjit reported the matter a day after the death. Kalpana
was declared brought dead by the hospital at 8.30pm on Sunday
and the matter was reported to the police today at 10.00
am
- Paramjit was also reluctant and not willing for the autopsy
of his wife but the body of Kalpana has been sent for post
mortem
