Sunil Amrith Wins 2025 British Academy Book Prize for The Burning Earth

Renowned historian Sunil Amrith has been awarded the 2025 British Academy Book Prize for his groundbreaking work, The Burning Earth.

Commenting on behalf of the judging panel, Professor Rebecca Earle FBA, chair of the judges, praised the book as “a masterful exploration of the intertwined histories of humanity and the environment.”

She noted that The Burning Earth offers a vivid and elegantly written narrative that powerfully connects human history with the ongoing environmental transformation shaping our planet. “This is essential reading for anyone who wishes to grasp the roots of today’s climate crisis,” she said.

Professor Earle further commended Amrith’s global perspective, which illuminates both how the environment has shaped human civilization and how human activity has, in turn, transformed the natural world. “As Amrith demonstrates, the two are inseparable,” she remarked.

Acknowledging the strength of this year’s shortlist, Earle concluded, “Selecting a single winner from such outstanding works was no simple task, but the panel unanimously felt that The Burning Earth perfectly embodies the spirit of the prize — to deepen our understanding of the world we share.”
