Captain Jay Singh-Sohal, the man behind a national memorial dedicated to Sikh soldiers of World War One, has been awarded an OBE for his contributions to commemorating Commonwealth troops who served Britain. The 42-year-old, who hails from Sutton Coldfield, received the honour from Princess Anne during a ceremony at St James’s Palace.
Singh-Sohal, chair of the WW1 Sikh Memorial Fund, created the memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. He said the goal of the project was to inspire a spirit of service and remembrance among wider communities. Reflecting on the honour, he described the day as “amazing” and said he was delighted to meet the Princess Royal again after previously speaking with her in Cape Town.
The memorial pays tribute to the 130,000 Sikh soldiers who fought in World War One. The statue was made possible after more than 150 supporters pledged over £22,000. According to the fund, Sikhs represented 20% of the British Indian Army in the conflict, despite making up only 1% of India’s population at the time.
Singh-Sohal said the memorial, established in 2015, ensures that Sikh contributions are visibly recognised at the National Memorial Arboretum.
Captain Singh-Sohal said:
"[It's hoped it will] inspire many more people to take an interest, to do the research and find out more about Sikh service historically, with a view of inspiring public service amongst the wider communities at large today,"
