NRI Harroop Singh Bola, a 23-year-old from Leicester, has received the Diana Award, the most esteemed recognition for young individuals excelling in social action or humanitarian work. The award, established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, is supported by her sons, Prince William, The Prince of Wales, and Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex. It acknowledges young leaders who dedicate themselves to positive societal change.
NRI Harroop, a final-year medical student at Imperial College London, founded the British Indian Medical Association (BIMA) in 2020 to support British-Indian medical students facing challenges similar to his own as a first-generation medical student. Under his leadership, BIMA has grown into a thriving network of over 2,000 members, offering mentorship, career guidance, and cultural initiatives.
Since its inception, BIMA has organized more than 250 events, supported over 200 students with applications, and provided mentorship to hundreds of aspiring medical leaders. Harroop has also collaborated with the General Medical Council and worked to improve British-Indian representation in healthcare, leaving a lasting impact on the UK’s medical community.
Dr. Tessy Ojo CBE, CEO of the Diana Award, praised recipients, saying, "These young people demonstrate that they have the power to change the world—a belief also held by Diana, Princess of Wales. We hope this honor inspires more young people to make a difference in their communities."
Nominees for the Diana Award must have dedicated at least 12 months to leading positive social change. This year saw over 1,700 submissions, making it the most competitive to date.
NRI Harroop’s work continues to inspire similar initiatives, reflecting the spirit of the Diana Award by driving positive, lasting change in the medical field and beyond.
