NRI Achamma Cherian, Nurse, is recovering from severe and life-changing injuries after being stabbed during her night shift at the Royal Oldham Hospital’s Acute Medical Unit in Greater Manchester.

The attack occurred on Saturday night, prompting the arrest of 37-year-old Rumon Haque. The Greater Manchester Police have since charged Haque with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article. He appeared before Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody. Haque is scheduled to appear at Manchester Crown Court next month.
“The victim, a woman in her 50s, sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalized. Her injuries are considered life-changing,” a police statement confirmed.

Detective Superintendent Matt Walker from Greater Manchester Police expressed his support for the victim and her loved ones: “Our thoughts are with the nurse as she continues to receive treatment in hospital. Supporting her, her family, and her colleagues is our priority at this challenging time. We are also working closely with NHS staff to assist anyone affected by this tragic incident.”

Initial reports indicated that the attack was carried out by a member of the public, with authorities confirming they are not seeking any additional suspects. “This is a serious incident that has left a woman in a critical condition,” said Detective Sergeant Craig Roters.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation and messages of support. UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed his shock via social media: “My thoughts are with the nurse and her loved ones following this horrific attack at the Royal Oldham Hospital. Nurses are the backbone of our NHS and deserve to work without fear of violence.”

Heather Caudle, Chief Nursing Officer at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, which oversees the hospital, said: “We are incredibly shocked and saddened by this incident. Our focus is on supporting our colleague and their family during this time. We also extend our thoughts to staff and patients who were present and may have been deeply distressed.”
Caudle assured the public that hospital services remain operational and reiterated their commitment to assisting the police investigation.
