Congress led UPA deliberately creating grain storage crisis in Punjab to scuttle smooth procurement of wheat-Sukhbir

Chandigarh, 29 March

Sukhbir Singh Badal Shiromani Akali Dal President squarely blamed union government for deliberately creating wheat storage crisis in Punjab to fail Punjab Government’s wheat procurement program starting from April 1.
In a statement issued here today, Mr. Badal Said that Punjab Government since last six months had been requesting Union Food Ministry and Railway Ministry to make arrangements to move out old stock of wheat and paddy stacked in the godowns of Punjab to make way for new stock to be procured by procurement agencies. He said that Union Food Secretary during his review meeting five months ago was specifically requested that railway would have to move 7 Lakh tons per month grains from Punjab but despite assurance not much was done on the ground. He said that this was being done deliberately at the instance of Congress party as they knew that procurement of wheat would coincide with Lok Sabha elections and any difficulty faced by the farmers in selling his wheat would reflect badly on the ruling SAD-BJP alliance.
Mr. Badal said that despite evil design of Union Government, Punjab government was committed to procure every single grain of wheat brought by the farmers to the mandis without any hassle. He said that procurement machinery in the state has been put on full alert with setting up of over 1700 procurement centers in the state.
Mr. Badal said that Union government should permit direct export of wheat from Punjab to Pakistan, Afghanistan and other central Asian countries through wagha border to ensure remunerative prices to farmers. He decried Union Government for not linking MSP with price index and not accepting the recommendations of Swaminathan Commission. He said that once NDA comes to power they would link MSP of agricultural produce with whole sale price index.
Mr. Badal also took a serious note of statement of Capt. Amrinder Singh regarding making a list of police and civil officers with a threat that he would submit this list to election commission. Mr. Badal said that it was blatant violation of modal code of conduct as Captain was trying to threaten the officers with dire consequences so that they are not able to perform their duties impartially. He said that election commission should not encourage these frivolous complaints.
