Gold has special significance in celebrations, and even though diamonds
may be considered a woman's best friend, the former is still the preferred
choice for events like marriages.
The price of gold might have reached dizzy heights this season, but
customers are still going for the latest designs in mangalasutras, earrings,
bangles and rings, besides traditional ornaments like armlets and waistbands.
"I certainly prefer jewellery which I can carry around. I can
wear and it is light. It is like an investment, and diamonds are what
I go for today," said Gita, a customer.
Simran, another customer, said: "Most of the time we are not wearing
Indian clothes. So, any jewelry that goes with both Indian and western
outfits would actually be the best which you can buy."
Bridal make-up is a huge draw in every city of Punjab these days. The
recently-held bridal show in Ludhiana invited some 10 parlours to dress-up
their models with their latest styles.
The mehandi' tattoos, heavy traditional jewellery and hairstyles were
the elements on which the best models were judged. This occasion reflects
the changing aspirations and lifestyles of the Punjabi society today.
It also provided a unique opportunity and a big platform for bridal
make-up parlours.
Radhika Bhalla, a saloon owner, said: "Nowadays, a lot of NRI's
are coming for marriages to India. So, they have their own style, they
have their own way of getting dressed up. So, they do pay lot of money
to us. But it is not about the money, they want perfection, so that's
what we look for. Business is good and is a very big industry."
"So, if you good you can earn lot of money and reputation. For
this, you have to be tough and be up-to-date with the competition, otherwise
you are not there in the queue," she concludes.
