In a heartbreaking incident, 11 Indians, including a married couple and a man celebrating his birthday, lost their lives due to carbon monoxide poisoning in Gudauri, a popular ski resort in Georgia. The tragedy unfolded over the weekend when the victims were found above an Indian restaurant in the region.

The victims include Sameer Kumar, who had recently moved to Georgia in search of better job opportunities, and a couple, Ravinder Singh and Gurvinder Kaur, who had traveled to Georgia earlier this year in pursuit of a brighter future. A 12th victim, a Georgian national, also succumbed to the poisoning.

Cause of the Incident

Preliminary investigations by Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs revealed no signs of violence or external injuries on the victims' bodies. It is believed that the deaths occurred due to carbon monoxide poisoning from a power generator placed near the bedrooms. The generator was reportedly turned on after the building’s electricity was switched off.

Authorities are now investigating whether negligence played a role in the tragedy and are considering potential charges of “negligent manslaughter.”

Families Devastated

The news has left the victims’ families in India shattered. Gurdeep Kumar, the brother of Sameer Kumar, shared that they last spoke to him on Friday, a day before his birthday. The family’s attempts to contact him on his special day were futile, and they later learned of the tragedy through the restaurant owner.

In Sunam village, relatives of Ravinder Singh and Gurvinder Kaur are mourning their loss. The couple had invested over 1.3 million rupees to move to Georgia, hoping for a better life.

Government Assistance

The Indian government has stepped in, coordinating with the victims’ families and Georgian authorities to repatriate the bodies for final rites.

Carbon Monoxide – The Silent Killer

Carbon monoxide, often called the "silent killer," is an odorless and colorless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. If inhaled, it prevents oxygen from being carried in the bloodstream, leading to fatal poisoning. This tragedy underscores the importance of ensuring proper ventilation and safety when using power generators and other fuel-based appliances.
