Varun Khanna's 'BEYOND HONOR'
Beyond Honor is a suspense drama that graphically depicts
the violent devastation of the American dream for an
immigrant cross-cultural family where, an Egyptian immigrant
father and an American daughter relentlessly pursue
radically different concepts of Honor. The conflict
reaches barbaric proportions whereby these seemingly
everyday characters come face-to-face and wage a horrific
full-blown battle to preserve and regain their Honor.
Produced by Los Angeles based production house Cine02
Productions, 'BEYOND HONOR' was recently screened at
MAMI Film Festival wherein it was the much-talked movie
of the festival. 'Beyond Honor' is a hard-hitting movie
with stupendous graphical representation revealing the
atrocious side of human beliefs and torment women are
subjected to even today. The movie is directed by Mumbai
born - US based director Mr. Varun Khanna, currently
working on his second film 'Spice of life' starring
Anupam Kher, Dee Wallace Stone and David Oyelowo.
Raised in Bombay, India, Khanna, after years, as a
teenage professional actor was one of the youngest professional
stage directors in the sub-continent at age 17 with
his production of Peter Shaffer's Equus. With Beyond
Honor, Varun Khanna makes his debut as feature film
writer and director.
With a BS in Physics from St. Xavier's College, an
MA in scenic design from The University of Akron and
an MFA in directing / acting from The Ohio State University,
The Drama League of New York, in 1992 chose Khanna as
one of three upcoming directors during a national US
search.
A classically trained actor, Khanna after directing
in the mid-west and New York for several years ran a
leading theatre company in Ohio till 1995. He then moved
to Los Angeles in 1996 to write for television news
magazine. After years of working in television at WPXN,
KSCI, The International Channel, and KTSF as segment
producer, producer, writer and editor; Khanna founded
Millindius, Inc a technology company that was acquired
in 2003.
With roots deep in the theatre tradition, Khanna most
enjoys working with actors through the medium of film.
He is also a member of the Academy of Television, Arts
and Sciences. A life-long ambition to create world-class
cinema has been the compelling reason for this writer
/ director to stay committed to the art of story telling.
A believer in technology and the digital age, Khanna
is most influenced by stage director Peter Brook and
film director Peter Weir and writers, Sam Shepard and
Heiner Muller. Khanna is currently in post-production
for his second feature film 'Spice of Life' starring
Anupam Kher, Dee Wallace Stone, David Oyelowo, and Ranjit
Chowdhry. Khanna is currently writing a Hindi film.
Also screened at 15th Palmspring Film Festival, renowned
critic Robert Koehler says, A graphic indictment
of the physical and psychic horrors of female circumcision
as well as an uncommonly frank depiction of an extremely
patriarchal Arab-American family sets Varun Khanna's
"Beyond Honor" apart. The picture is an undeniably
bold and daring tragedy. Mumbai-born, Los Angeles-based
Khanna points his lens at an immigrant culture other
than his own, one colored by post - 9/11 Yank antipathy
