The United Kingdom has officially chosen “Santosh” as its entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. Directed and written by Sandhya Suri, the film won Best International Debut at the 2024 Jerusalem Film Festival, premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, and is set for a U.S. theatrical release in December 2024.
The film follows Santosh (played by Shahana Goswami), a young widow forced to leave behind her domestic life to take over her late husband's job as a police officer in rural India. Mentored by Inspector Sharma (Sunita Rajwar), a strong and experienced leader, Santosh embarks on an investigation into the murder of a girl from a marginalized community. The case draws her into a web of crime and corruption, pushing her to confront not only the broken system around her but also her own identity within it.
The U.K. has been nominated three times for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, winning the award last year for Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest.” Previous nominees include "Hedd Wyn" (1993) and "Solomon & Gaenor" (1999).
Suri’s short film “The Field” won Best International Short Film at TIFF in 2018 and was nominated for a BAFTA in 2019. She participated in the Sundance Screenwriters' and Directors' Lab in 2016 with her first feature, “Santosh,” which had its world premiere at Cannes in 2024.
Produced by Mike Goodridge, James Bowsher, Balthazar de Ganay, and Alan McAlex, “Santosh” will be distributed by Metrograph Pictures in December 2024.
