A fourth man has been charged in connection with the shooting death
of a young Brampton woman who was gunned down in the hallway of her
home last March.
A 26-year-old Toronto man surrendered to Peel homicide detectives yesterday
morning outside of the A Grenville & William Davis Courthouse in
Brampton.
He was charged late yesterday afternoon with first-degree murder in
connection with 20-year-old Amretta Singh's death.
With assistance from Interpol, Peel police continue to hunt for a suspect
they believe to be the gunman.
The man charged yesterday is the third to be charged with first-degree
murder in the case. Singh, who planned to study nursing, was shot twice
by a man who fired through the front door of her Sunforest Dr. home
in the early hours of March 20. The woman died a short time later in
hospital.
A first-degree murder arrest warrant remains in place for Vijayarajah
Manickavasagar, 23, whom police believe is now being harboured by friends
in Sri Lanka.
Another Toronto man arrested and charged Saturday with accessory after
the fact made a brief appearance in the same court and was remanded
until Wednesday.
More than 200 people have been questioned by police over the past several
months in connection with the shooting. Singh and her brothers took
a taxi home from the Calypso Hut nightclub soon after one of her brothers
accidentally bumped into another person on the dance floor and words
were exchanged, police said.
Police have said that only three people were in the red Honda Civic
that followed Singh and her brothers home from the Melanie Dr. nightclub
in Brampton the night of the shooting. They arrived home at about 2:50
a.m. and were immediately confronted by a man with a handgun, police
said.
Singh and her brothers ran inside, but seconds later a barrage of bullets
came through the front door, striking Singh in her face and abdomen.
Jeyaganesh Satkuru, 26, of Toronto, who was charged yesterday with
conspiracy to commit murder, is to appear today in a Brampton court
along with Stenwick Hookumchand, 21, of Toronto and Navaneethan Kunananthan,
24, of Toronto, who were arrested last week and charged with first-degree
murder.
Prasad Thiruchelvam, 23, of Toronto has been charged with accessory
after the fact to murder.
He remains in custody and is to appear Wednesday in a Brampton court.
