Sindhi Community Celebrates Teejri
Los Angeles, Aug. 16, 2011
By Dilip Butani
Sindhi Community celebrated festival of Teejri on August 16, at The Sindhu Center, Norwalk. Teejri falls on 3rd day after the full moon. Married Hindu women pray and keep a fast for the health of their husband while the unmarried pray for marital bliss.
Everyone gathered at the Temple with Pooja Thali. After Pooja they waited for the moon to show, as the fast can only be broken after looking at the moon.
According to holy books Goddess Parvati fasted and prayed fervently for the great Lord Shiva to become her spouse. Touched by her devotion, he took her for his wife. Goddess Parvati, in gratitude, sent her emissary to preach and disseminate this religious fasting among mortal women, promising prosperity and longevity with their family. Thus was born the festival of Teejri. The observer beautifies herself adorning her body with ornaments, dresses in bright colors and decorates her hands and feet with henna.
The function was organized by Sarla Sippy, Anita Israni and Ratna Butani.
