It was the 3rd Annual ‘Remembrance Day’ organized by IIGS on Feb 22, 2014 in the memory of Captain K. H. Singh (lovingly known as Papaji) at Walnut Gurdwara Sahib. The Remembrance Day is also a day of Celebration as the top Sikh students who applied for the Captain K. H. Singh Scholarships were awarded the scholarships on this every evening.

Evening program started with Rehras Sahib path followed by melodious Kirtan and talks highlighting the life of Papaji and concluded with giving away of scholarships. Kirtan sewa was started by two Gujarati young boys Akash and Sagar who have been learning Kirtan and wanted to come and sing the wonderful Gurus Bani. Following them, Gurudwara Sahib Santa Ana’s GNCA students sang one beautiful shabad. Then Baba Farid Sangeet Academy’s students, Bhai Sahib Naib Singh, Bhai Sahib Anantvir Singh and Bhai Sahib Raghubir Singh ji and IIGS jatha regaled sangats with melodious Kirtan.

Sardarni Rajinderjit Kaur of New York, Sardarni Sumeet Kaur from Moreno Valley and Sardar Maninder Singh Sethi talked about Papaji’s  life, sewa and impact on the youth and Sikh sangats around the world. Their words and stories brought many joys and tears.

The Scholarship Awards: Sardarni Payal Kaur and Sardarni Maninder Kaur conducted this portion of the event. The number of applicants had gone up this year and so had the challenge of selecting the top talent. Students applied for these scholarships from all over USA and Canada. The judges had a very tough time deciding whom to grant the scholarship and whom to leave out. In the end, along with 3 scholarships, 2 special ‘Recognition Awards’ were given to top 5 applicants. The winners were Sardar Uddampreet Singh from Perkasie, PA, Sardar Japsimran Singh from Moreno Valley, CA and Sardar Gurchit Singh from Berkeley, CA for the scholarships. Special Recognition Awards went to Sardar Ikjot Singh from Burbank, CA and Sardarni Sumreen Kaur from Surrey, Canada.

In the last three years, IIGS has realized there is a huge need for these scholarships and the number of these scholarships needs to go up. Special request was made to the Sangat to consider donating towards the Scholarship funds. In the coming years, IIGS hopes to increase the number of scholarships as well as the value of the scholarships.

"A special thank you to all who came to be part of the evening," said Kaviraj Singh. "Also, to all the participants, volunteers who came to help with langar preparations, Sardarni Savneet Kaur for announcements, Sardar Atuljit Singh for video recording, Sardarni Poonam Singh and Sardarni Gurpreet Kaur for preparing and bringing the students from GNCA, all the Bhai Sahibs, all the speakers and above all, Walnut Gurdwara Sahib and the Gurdwara management, THANK YOU."
