Richmond’s Highway to Heaven is a very popular place for visitors. School students and other interested individuals and groups visit this small stretch of Number Five Road on a regular basis. Close to 25 places of worship of different denominations, welcome visitors from all over. A few weeks ago, British Columbia’s Attorney General and Deputy Premier Niki Sharma had the honour to pay her obeisance at India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas.
After a very productive meeting with the Gurdwara, Executive Committee Ms. Sharma enjoyed a delicious langar in the Langar Hall with the Gurdwara congregation. After that, she visited several other places of worship to pay her obeisance. The AG/Deputy Premier had a very enjoyable conversation with officials at all the places of worship she managed to visit. This was a great honour for all of us to welcome her.
On Tuesday, June 30, a group of 30 young teens and adults from Cornerstone Christian Reformed Church in Chilliwack arrived at Gurdwara Nanak Niwas. As part of Mission Adventures, they were in Vancouver and visited different places of worship. Richmond’s Highway to Heaven is an ideal place to do so. On behalf of the Gurdwara management, I had the honour to welcome them and act as their host/guide. These young teens and their adult companions were keen to learn about Sikhism, the South Asian community and the Highway to Heaven. After my presentation they asked very intelligent questions about the Sikh faith, our community and the mutual co-operation between various faith groups along the Highway to Heaven. Afterwards, they took some pictures. Later, they enjoyed a delicious Langar (vegetarian meal) in the Langar Hall downstairs. Before leaving they thanked this writer and the Gurdwara Management Committee for a very warm welcome. They left a note for us with these words: “We really enjoyed our tour of your beautiful Gurdwara and learned a lot about the Sikh faith.
Thank you for your kindness and hospitality. Gurdwara Nanak Niwas is very pleased to welcome visitors from all over. Initiatives like this go a long way in projecting a very positive image of our community.
