A divorced man of Indian origin has been arrested in Durban after he allegedly stabbed to death his ex-wife and her boyfriend in the Indian-dominated township of Phoenix and then tried to commit suicide.

According to neighbours and relatives, the man arrived at the home of his ex-wife, Vanitha Nagalingam, in the suburb of Royal Manor Place and first attacked her boyfriend, Krish Nair. He stabbed the man several times before proceeding into a room where his former wife was sleeping. Nagalingam was aged 46 and Nair 47.

He then proceeded to "lock the door and then placed a pillow on her face. He then stabbed her more than 15 times", a neighbour said

Police spokesperson inspector Gugu Sabelo said on Tuesday the suspect was arrested and taken to hospital because he had tried to take his own life by slitting his wrists.

The man will appear in the local court as soon as he’s discharged from hospital, she said.
