Nazar Singh, Europe's oldest man, is dead

London, June 23, 2015: Nazar Singh, Europe's oldest man, died in India, barely a fortnight after celebrating his 111th birthday, a media report said.

Nazar Singh, who had nine children, 34 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren, died in the early hours of Saturday in India, Daily Mail reported on Tuesday.

He was born in Punjab in 1904 and was a resident in England for 50 years, moving in 1989 to the North East to live with one of his nine children.

He died in the early hours of Saturday in India, having travelled over to spend time with family, said his grandson Harvinder Gill, from Ashbrooke, Sunderland.

"He was an incredible chap," Gill was quoted as saying.

"He has lived a very happy and fulfilling life. For the past few weeks he has been suffering with a few illnesses. He has had pneumonia but he was a fighter. Unfortunately, his time has passed. It was early hours on Saturday, just before Fathers' Day," he added.

Singh had earlier said the secret to his long life was a strong family, good food and happiness.

The 111-year-old loved the outdoors, having been born on a farm and enjoyed drinking milk and almond oil. He ate fruit and had a drop of whisky every night.

His family said he never had a surfgery, had some of his original teeth and had no problems with his hearing.

Nazar Singh, Britain's oldest man, turns 111

London, June 9, 2015: Nazar Singh, a Sikh man who is now Britain's oldest man, has beaten an infection and made a full recovery to celebrate his 111th birthday on Tuesday -- with a pint and a whisky chaser.

Great-grandfather Nazar Singh was born on June 8, 1904, and has lived through two World Wars, the Titanic, the first moon landing and the invention of colour television.

He grew up in Indian Punjab and moved to England in 1965 to work as a foundry moulder. He lived in Walsall for almost 25 years before retiring in Sunderland in 1989, the Western Daily Press reported.

The centenarian has nine children, 34 grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren and was married to his wife, Narajan Kaur, for 70 years before she died 12 years ago, aged 90.

Nazar Singh's son Chain Singh Gill, 62, said the secret to his father's longevity was a healthy lifestyle and the odd glass of whiskey.

He also revealed that his father likes to drink milk and almond oil, regularly eats fruit and sleeps for 10 hours every night.
His family said he nearly died recently of an infection but pulled through and is currently seeing his family in India -- where he was pictured enjoying a beer and a shot.

"We thought we had lost him because he had an infection but, thankfully, he is recovering now," Gill said.
"I'm in contact with him, sometimes twice, every single day on the phone and he's in good spirits."

Born into a farming family, Nazar Singh always loved the outdoors and was a big fan of gardening, a hobby he refused to ditch until he turned 107…..(IANS)
