Satnam Singh Chahal has become the first Sikh Commissioner

A senior Punjabi journalist, Mr Satnam Singh Chahal has been made Sister County Commissioner for the Russia-Moscow region by the board of Supervisors of the Santa Clara county government in California for five years. Mr Chahal has become the first Sikh and also the first Indian American to be appointed to this top position.

Milpitas, a town with an approximate population of 15,000, borders San Jose and Freemont. A native of Jalandhar, Chahal has been living in Milpitas for the last three years, since his arrival from India.

 

 
 

"My job will be to recognize towns and cities in other countries and recommend them to the Milpitas City Council (for Sister City status)," the first Sikh commissioner, working for a biotech company, that manufactures surgical parts, said. "First, I'm going to recommend my native hometown, Jalandhar."
