Randhawa will contest for one of two seats on the Fairfield city council
for which elections are scheduled in November.
"This election will determine if our city plans and implements
an adequate response to changing demographics, meets the challenges
of growth and provides enhanced support to local people," Randhawa
said in a press release.
A resident of Fairfield for the past 18 years, Randhawa said he was
among seven candidates in the fray, but the response he had been getting
was encouraging.
"Fairfield is growing at a rapid rate. We need to be sensitive
to the needs of established residents as well as new residents,"
said Randhawa.
"We also need to ensure that everyone in our city is heard and
represented. I believe it is the responsibility of the city council
to provide that representation."
Randhawa said that if he was elected, he would focus on economic relief
for farmers and working with organisations for protection of marshes
and wetlands.
He also said that he would work toward tax incentives for businesses
that want to relocate or expand in downtown and also establish after
school programmes in an effort to cut juvenile crime.
"The children of a lot of working parents have nothing to do after
school hours. In the process, some of them end up doing wrong things.
I want to work on a city-sponsored programme so that they are gainfully
engaged," Randhawa said.
Born and raised in Jalandhar, Punjab, Randhawa migrated to the U.S.
in 1980 after a degree in business administration.
He started his career in the U.S. with a private firm after which he
worked with the correctional department of California.
He founded M&K Travel Services in 1993 and has four offices - three
in California and one in Seattle, Washington. Randhawa has two sons.
