"Kalpana Chawla Way" named at New York

New York's Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that 74th Street, between Roosevelt and 37th avenues, "Kalpana Chawla Way" in honour of the astronaut. At a street-naming event in New York's Indian quarters Jackson Heights (jocularly called Jaikishen Heights) to honour the India-born astronaut Kalpana Chawla, who died in the Space Shuttle explosion in February 2003, Bloomberg essayed a blooper that momentarily mystified the gathering.

He spoke effusively about how he had marched 30-40 blocks with Chawla in August 2003 in New York City and how proud he was to have known he

It will be more impressive is when people walk by this block and they see the sign, some will know and some won't know who she was," he said. "They'll stop, hopefully, and look and say that must have been somebody that made a difference."
