NRI Inderjit Singh loses Democratic primary

NEW YORK: Indian American Inderjit Singh, who contested the Democratic primary for a City Council seat here, polled 366 votes and was placed third.

Singh lost from Richmond Hill for the 28th City Council district (Queens) seat.

"Allen Jennings got 2,207 votes and was the winner. Yvonne Reddick, with 2,115 votes, was second while Singh, with 366 votes, was third," Chris Riley of the public relations department of the Board of Elections told IANS.

Jennings is the incumbent City Council member, while Reddick is district manager of the local community board. The Democratic Party had endorsed Reddick.

Singh had previously served at the U.N. and in the N.Y. Department of City Planning, Human Resources Administration and Housing Authority.

According to reports, there are over 49,000 registered Democrats in the 28th District, including 23,000 African Americans, 12,000 Indo-Caribbeans, including immigrants from India, 3,500 Irish and Italians each, and 7,000 Hispanics



 

NRI (Indian American) contests primary for New York council

New York (IANS) Indian American Democrat Inderjit Singh is contesting a primary for a seat in the New York City Council.

Singh, a former professor of economics at City University of New York and New York University, is contesting from Richmond Hill in Queens.

The balloting for selecting the Democratic Party candidate from the 28th District in Queens is scheduled for September 9.

The three-way race includes incumbent Councilman Allan Jennings and Yvonne Reddick, district manager of the local community board.

"This is an opportunity for the South Asian community to be represented at the highest level of legislative government for the city," Singh told IANS.

"I would like to reach out to the South Asian community to get involved in the campaign," he said.
