Brief Bio

Samata Singhi grew up in India. Her interest in developmental economics and healthcare started when she was young. By high school, studying economics and social planning, she knew she wanted to be a part of that process-"of envisioning, of shaping the future." This summer, she went back to India and interned at the Center for Disabled Children and volunteered at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, helping her parents provide free medical care. This furthered her interest in healthcare, and she decided to pursue pre-med studies with a major in chemistry (in addition to economics and management) to prepare for a career in welfare-policy planning.

Samata is a leader and member of several organizations that seek to foster understanding of diversity. She was awarded Albion's Bernard T. Lomas Scholarship in her first and second years as recognition of her contributions to the college and local community, an honor that is almost never awarded to a first-year student.

Samata was elected to the Cabinet of Albion College Student Senate, and she also helped to found the International Students Union. She is a member of the Albion College's Honors Institute, the Institute for Pre-health Studies and the Gerstacker Institute for Professional Management.

Samata plans to use her education in the Third World to try to increase the welfare of ordinary people and improve the quality of their lives.
