Blackbirds finish non-conference schedule with 2 out of 3 wins

Dec, 31, 2014

The LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds as they started the season on an eight-game losing streak. However, they beat Northern Arizona 78-72 on Monday night to finish the non-conference portion of their schedule with wins in two out of their last three games.

Sophie Bhasin scored a career-best 26 points as the Blackbirds are starting to win at the right time. It means She  led the game with a career-high 26 points and eight rebounds.

LIU Brooklyn envisioned as Northern Arizona pulled out to a quick 8-0 lead. That was NAU’s largest lead of the half, but it was maintained for a while until 25-9 run by the Blackbirds left them with a 35-25 lead late in the half. Bhasin hit a three late in that run which was significant because it was her first field goal of the half and finally got her involved.

The Blackbirds head back to New York, specifically Staten Island, where they will take on Wagner in the first game of the Northeast Conference portion of their schedule…..Reference - LIU, Women's Basketball/ Rob Abruzzese

Bhasin has become fluent with the term "triple double

February 1, 2012

Glenn Nelson/ESPN.com Senior guard Sophia Basin, a Long Island University recruit, has been on a scoring and triple-double tear for Cajon (San Bernardino, Calif.).

Bhasin has become fluent with the term "triple double," for example. She has produced seven straight of them for Cajon (San Bernardino, Calif.), heading into its game Tuesday night against Rialto (Calif.). During that stretch, she had four straight games with 33, 45, 39 and 38 points.

"I knew I had to step up," said Bhasin, a Sikh who maintains dual citizenship in the U.S. and India. She did because Angelica Guardado, the team's 5-foot-10 "post," good for 10.6 points and 8.3 rebounds for Cajon's 29-2 team last season, suffered an ACL tear in December.

Bhasin's backcourt mate, 5-5 Dejaunee Brooks, also has stepped forward, averaging a triple-double with 12.6 points, 10.9 assists and 10.4 rebounds. And, oh by the way, coach Mark Lehman has collected his 600th career varsity coaching victory during this magical 19-3 season for Cajon.

But this clearly has been Bhasin's show ("If she doesn't shoot the ball, we don't win," Lehman said. "It's as simple as that."), made all the more compelling by the cultural hurdles she's had to overcome. …..Reference - Glenn Nelson | HoopGurlz

Thursday night as Bhasin scored 29 points to help defeat San Bernardino Pacific 88-61,” said Cajon coach Mark Lehman

Today at 6 p.m. Bhasin and the Cowgirls (19-3, 9-1) take the court against visiting Rialto (18-2, 9-1) in a first-place showdown. The 5-foot-7 senior guard will try to continue a torrid streak in San Andreas League play in which she’s scored 33, 45, 39, 38 and 29 points.

Bhasin’s 45 points vs. Rialto Carter ranks fourth on Cajon’s all-time list behind former teammate Layshia Clarendon. Clarendon, now at Cal, has the top three individual-game efforts and is Cajon’s all-time leading scorer with 2,875 points. Bhasin has more than 1,400 career points and is not done yet.

“She can make a shot off the dribble,” Lehman said. “Not too many players can do that, not even the pros.”….Ref: JOHN MURPHY , Press-Enterprize, Riverside, Ca, USA
