New Delhi police got more than 14 complaints from USA and UK
NRIs that their land had been grabbed or sold in south Delhi by
organized "land mafia". This land mafia sold their land
with forged documents but some cases they put NRIs in trouble
by obtaining bank loans against their property.
According to IANS reporter, the land mafia - mostly a bunch of
unscrupulous real estate agents - form a well-organised network
to keep a close watch on the lands and properties of those NRIs
who hardly visit the city. The land mafia has formed a complex
web including government and bank officials to keep a tab on people
who rarely visit their properties back home
Another official reports that mafia group keep eye of NRI's visit,
stay period and status of their land. They also find whose name
was on initial deed, legal document signed and who look after
the property. They also involve the the person who look after
the property by paying lump sum of money under the table.
After all forged papers, they find buyers and brain wash them
by saying that the seller is in big trouble with behind payments
because of medical bills, marriage of daughter or family dispute.
Some times they show fake offer from other buyer.
The police also got complaint from some buyers that when they
paid down payment and back up from the deals for some doubts,
then mafia group gave them threats and refund 80% of the ordinal
amount paid as final settlement out of the court.
Some banks had given big loans on these properties. Later on,
even these banks came to know the story, the banks slow to respond
or registered a case against the accused persons. .
